Audience Engagement and Measurement: 28 February 2013
Viewing trends and consumer engagement are changing around the world. In this ASTRA Spotlight event we will hear about audience measurement internationally and in Australia: how it is being used to measure consumer engagement and how the results are affecting the broadcast business model. International research expert Artie Bulgrin will share multi-media research and consumer insights from his work with ESPN globally; Duane Varan will provide key highlights from his work with the Disney Media Labs in the US and Sylvano Lucchetti, Director of Technical Services for OzTAM will present trends from the OzTAM multiscreen report and discuss ways that OzTAM is meeting the growing demand for information about all aspects of the Australian consumer’s digital life. Speakers included Artie Bulgrin, Senior Vice President Research and Analytics, ESPN USA, Prof Duane Varan, Executive Director of Audience Research Labs, Murdoch University and Sylvano Lucchetti, Director of Technical Services, OzTAM.
Innovation: What's Next for Foxtel: 20 November 2012
It is predicted that over the next 12 months the television environment will change dramatically as viewers embrace Smart TVs, tablet viewing and a blended TV experience. With the launch of Foxtel Go in early November, subscribers will be able to watch 21 live channels and catch up episodes from hundreds of titles on computers and tablets. How will the product be embraced by customers and how will viewing be monitored? Kym Niblock, General Manager, Emerging Platforms at Foxtel will give a demo of Foxtel Go, sharing preliminary feedback from the launch and providing insight into how channels can maximise this new distribution platform. In addition, Kym will share how Foxtel continues to innovate and provide the best viewing experience for subscribers.
The Changing Viewer Experience: August 2012
As devices and ‘apps’ proliferate and vie for viewer’s attention, television content creators and marketers are looking to facilitate increased engagement and lean-forward viewing. Our panel of experts will discuss new technology, how and if it is changing behaviour, and what TV viewing might look like in the future. Moderated by Bruce Meagher, Director Corporate Affairs, Foxtel, the panel discussed current research around audience motivation in a multi-screen world, new technology which is both making content more accessible and increasing viewer engagement. Presenters included Matthew Deaner, Screen Australia, presenting new research around audience motivation in a multi-screen world; Evan Manolis, Group Manager, AV at Samsung Electronics Australia, presenting the Foxtel application now available on Smart TVs and how this will impact viewing; and, Craig Blair, CEO, Zeebox, presenting the new ‘agnostic’ app (Zeebox) that aims to engage viewers across all television content.

Hear directly from the heads of marketing about objectives and the creative process around two stellar campaigns. Presenters will include detail on strategy as well as tactical execution. See each campaign in its entirety and the results which were used to measure success. Campaigns presented: I Believe... STUDIO at the Melbourne Festival 2011 which won for the Most Outstanding Marketing Campaign Under $50,000, presented by Jo McAlister, Head of Marketing for SBS Subscription TV; and, the showcase campaign for Tim Winton's cloudstreet which won Most Outstanding Off-air Program Promotion and Most Outstanding PR/Communications Campaign, presented by Miranda Stojanovski, Marketing Director, Showtime Movie Channels.
Australian Content in a Converged World: 2 December 2011
Media convergence will drive an increasingly competitive media and communications environment that encourages the development of a more diverse range of new content and innovative services for consumers. Hosted by ASTRA Chairman The Honorable Steve Bracks AC, this session focused on Australian content, issues and opportunity for change that will assist in creating quality television. The panel of speakers shared their opinions and experience in working within current frameworks and helping to shape regulation which encourages competition. Panelists included Bruce Mann, CEO, XYZnetworks, Anthony Mrsnik, Director Legal & Business Affairs, The Premium Movie Partnership (Showtime Movie Channels) and Dr Ric Simes, Director, PhD UPenn, MEc ANU, BComm (Hons) UNSW, FAICD who discussed the recent Deloitte Access Economics report. ASTRA CEO Petra Buchanan also presented a summary of the ASTRA submission to the Convergence Review.

The strengths and attributes of a brand can be used to drive change, create opportunities and inspire people to take action. Three speakers presented on programs and projects they have created which are having positive effects for the media industry. The presenters shared the impetus for their initiatives and inspired the audience to think creatively about brands and their potential to engage consumers on many levels. Digital Tracker Update: 7 April 2010
In September 2008, the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) commissioned Newspoll to undertake research into Australian households’ readiness for digital television (Digital Tracker). The fourth quarterly survey was conducted in October to December 2009, and relevant highlights will be presented.
