ASTRA members have developed, and participate in, innovative and effective corporate social responsibility programs across Australia.

The subscription TV industry fosters talent and contributes to the wider community through stand-alone and ongoing initiatives. ASTRA members and staff participate in social corporate responsibility programs such as grants, sponsorships, workplace giving, educational and environmental schemes, supporting community sport, arts and indigenous programs.
Promoting Excellence

To ensure that programs and materials are preserved in the national audiovisual collection, ASTRA members have entered into a donation agreement with the National Film and Sound Archive ensuring that the history of STV in Australia will be available for the community, researchers and historians for years to come.

The popular ASTRA Graduate Program, now in its third year, co-ordinated in collaboration with the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), offers graduates of the AFTRS Diploma the opportunity to apply for 13-week contracts working with STV organisations. To-date, 29 participants have been through the program, many continuing on in careers within STV.

Foxtel continues to reward and develop Australian creative talent through partnerships with the Walkley Foundation, Equity Foundation, the Australian Writers’ Guild, AFTRS and Bell Shakespeare.

ASTRA channel members partner with universities, cultural institutes and organisations to provide training and opportunities to nurture talent.
Grassroots and Community Outreach

Children and youth benefit from sport programs in local communities supported by FOX SPORTS’ commitment to grassroots programs.

School students benefit from programs to educate and expand their knowledge of the world, including the National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition, supporting geography education, and Channel [V]’s support for Rock the Schools, a free education and entertainment initiative.

Foxtel Lap, a corporate treadmill challenge has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

A-PAC, Australia's Public Affairs Channel, is dedicated to debate, discussion and democracy.

The Aurora channel broadcasts independent community programming.

Broadcast airtime is provided for community service announcements supporting a range of causes.
Reconciliation and Inclusion

STV supports the Media Reconciliation Industry Network Group (Media RING), the aim of which is to celebrate the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a number of initiatives including building awareness and understanding, increasing representation in the media industry and deepening connections by developing projects and responding to needs and aspirations.

Over 320,000 hours of captioned programming are provided annually across 70 channels to assist deaf and hard of hearing subscribers.

Telstra provides seniors grants to run educational workshops for older Australians on using mobile phones and the internet.
Environmental Commitment

ASTRA members actively promote environmental practices in the workplace and wider community.

STV’s Voluntary Code of Conduct is improving the energy efficiency of conditional access set top boxes used across the industry. Government modelling estimates that one million tonnes of household carbon emissions will be avoided in Australian households by 2020 because of the Code’s operation.

For three years running the ASTRA Conference has been a carbon neutral event.
